SURPRISE VISITORS AT THE GOURMET LADY
Yesterday I was on the lookout for the UPS man. This is a frequent hobby of mine. It's not just that he's handsome and charming, which he certainly is, but more importantly if I can give him my boxes then my customers get their orders in a timely fashion. For those of you that live in big cities where you can drop off your shipments at UPS locations anywhere, it may come as a surprise to you that we don't have such a place in beautiful downtown Yachats. The once-a-day chance to send boxes out is an exciting part of my day as a merchant. Anyway, I was at the window peeking out, watching for the big brown truck, and I spied two ladies walking down the sidewalk that looked strangely familiar. I looked more carefully, and sure enough, it was my cousins, Claudia and Diane. They were just strolling down the street as if it were an every day event, but they have never been to Yachats before. They are my "Indian cousins" and these Indian relatives of mine are prone to doing things like showing up and surprising each other. And here was my chance to surprise them. So I waved frantically and then ran out to hug them and say things like, what the heck are you doing here? They were on their way home from some tribal business in Lincoln City and decided to stop in and see this cousin of theirs who is the Gourmet Lady. We discussed the latest family news, including Aunt Martha's evil plot to engage various family members in a dish towel chain letter. Thank goodness I didn't receive one. My mom sent Aunt Martha a very worn out dish towel with a note that said, this is what you get for putting my name on this list. Of course I was compelled to take their picture for my collection of celebrity photos (one of them dutifully held up the pink shopping bag). It was a brief and very fun visit. And just after they left, the UPS man really did arrive. |
